Those who have read the Indian history cannot forget the stressed days of the 1857 mutiny,during which the Madras University was established. Started on the model of the London University,146 years ago, the University of Madras still continues to be one of the leading centres of education in India. The University was incorporated by the Act(No.XXVII) of 1857 of the Legislative Council of India with a Senate and Council of India with a Senate and four faculties(Arts,Law,Medicine and Civil Engineering).
