Hazrat Baba Dargah
This Muslim Saint Hazarat Baba's real name was Hazrath Dastageer Sahib Baba. It is nearly 300 years since his demise. He had ford seen his death and had told his disciples not to conduct the Janaza(Funeral) prayers under any other Imam. Baffled disciples were much delighted when the Baba himself appeared and disappeared after conducting his own Janaza prayer. Located at 83, Dr.Natesan Road, Chennai-5.

Thousand Lights Mosque
Situated in the heart of city and facing with heavy traffic and busiest place in Chennai with walls bearing recently-painted sayings from the Holy Koran. Masjid Mamoor
This is a mosque sacred to Muslims living in Mannady area in Chennai. Seashore St.Anthony's Shrine
It is no exaggeration to say that the very first miracle which St.Anthony performed in this little town of Palavakkam was to select a place of his own in honour of his name on the shores of Bay of Bengal. The humble origin of this Shrine dates back to the year 1997 when on 24th February, the Catholic residents of Palkalainagar,Palavakkam,enthusiastically erected a thatched shed in honour of St.Anthony. St.Mary's Church-Fort St. George
St.Mary's Church, the first Anglican Church in India, was constructed in 1680. It was here that the marriages of the then Governor of Madras Elihu Yale- the one who established the Yale University in USA- and Robert Clive were solemnised. St. George's Cathedral
This Cathedral which is 188 years old is remarkable for its splendid architectural beauty built in 1815. St.Andrew's Kirk
Described in the British days as the 'Noblest edifice in Hindustan',St. Andrew's Kirk, an almost two-century-old church, as S.Muthaiah, the eminent historian of Madras writes, is perhaps one of the 'best examples of Georgian architecture in Asia. 'W.T.Munro describes the church in Madras ' the most splendid church in Madras'. The name itself is suggestive of the Scottish connections the City had, or rather the Madras Presidency of the British days. In 1815 a Scot was even appointed minister in tin Presidency of Madras. Kamarajar Memorial House
He was born on 15.7.1903 to Mr.Kumaraswamy and Mrs.Sivagami Ammaiyar at Virudupatti now called as Virudunagar,Madurai District. He was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 13.4.1954 to 1.10..1963, this period is still considered as a 'golden period' of Tamil Nadu, since independence. Kamaraj lived in this house till his death. This house is now converted into a Memorial place and it is maintained by Tamil Nadu Government. He passed away on 2.10.1975. G.K.Moopanar Memorial
He was a senior Tamil Nadu politician with ties to the Indian Nation Congress. If was a powerful All india Congress Committee general secretary from 1980 to 1988. Moopanar did not get along well Narasimha Rao, who was the Prime Minister of India from 1991 to 1996. He parted ways with Rao on the issue on his joining hands with the AIADNK and founded his own party, the Tamil Maanila Congress(TMC). After Moopanar's death both TMC and Chidambaram's group merged back with the Congress. His memorial is situated near Anna Flyover,GN Chetty Road, Teynampet, Chennai-18.
M.G.R Memorial House
Maruthur Gopala Ramachandram. He was the Chief Minister for the following periods 30.6.1977 to 17.2.1980, 9.6.1980 to 10.2.1985, 10.2.1985 to 24.12.1987. He was born on 17.1.1917 in Kandy,Srilanka to Mr.Maruthur Gopala Menon and Mrs.Sathyabama. His wife's name was Mrs.Janaki. Quaid-E-Milleth Manimandapam
Native of Melapalayam, Tirunelveli District. Born on 5th June, 1896 and died on 4th April 1972. He was the founder of Indian Muslim League. In 1948 he was appointed as a member of Indian political constitution. He was elected thrice from Mancheri constituency in Kerala to the Parliament. Mozhipor Thiyagigal Mandapam
This mandapam was constructed in memory of those who fought and laid down their lives against the imposition of Hindi. Government Museum
A pre-1789 assemblage by the British, called Pantheon Complex today houses the Goverment Museum, Connemara Public Library and the National Art Gallery. The museum contains exhibits ranging from contemporary artifacts to prehistorical findings. Sculptures and bronzes various periods, sections for zoology, anthropology and geology impress every visitor. Buddhist sculptures found in the Amaravathi section depict the events recorded in the life of the Buddha.
Snake Park
This servilito showcases a variety of snakes such as the Python, the King cobra, as well as other reptiles including turtles and tortoises. There is also a centre to demonstrate venom extraction and offer interesting information on the nature and the habits of snakes. It was founded by Romulus Whittacker. National Art Gallery
A find specimen for the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, this building is constructed in red sandstone. Not only the treasuers of art works found inside but also the building itself is interesting, for it is filled with intricate carvings. Some of the listed artifacts in the national art gallery are 16th to 18th century Mughal paintings, Debac art of the 17th century and the displays of bronzes from 10th and 13th centuries and handicrafts of various periods. Government Museum, Chennai is a multi-purpose State Government Museum located in Egmore, which is the heart of the city, spreading to am area of 16.25 acres of land. Six independent buildings in this Museum campus has 46 galleries.

Guindy National Park
Chennai city has its own charm and unique pride of having a national park within city limits. This is the first of its kind in this world as it is situated within the city. Spawling over hundreds of acres and interspersed with different species of trees, this park is the lung of Chennai. It is also the habitat for some rare endangered species, Spotted Deer, White Buck, Bonnet Monkey and Indian Civet cat. Fort Museum
North of Secretariat is the Fort Museum, which was once the Fort officers' mess. It was a bank then. The long room upstairs was the Public Exchange Hall and the roof built, in 1796, was also the first lighthouse of Chennai. The museum formally opened in 1948 has a fine collection of original writings of the men who made Chennai. Ashtalakshmi Temple
The name Ashtalakshmi is obtained because it is dedicated to Eight Manifestations of Goddess Mahalakshmi. The festival season is between the month of September and October. Parthasarathy Swamy Temple
It is one of the most reputed temples for the followers of Vaishnavism, a sub-sect of Hinduism. Located in Triplicane,this is also an excellent specimen of ancient South Indian temple architecture. Sri Vadapalani Andavar Temple
This temple enshrines Vadapalani Andavar in a manner similar to the Palani temple. Other shrines here include those to Meenakshi, Sundareshwarar. This temple is of fairly recent origin. Although Lord Muruga in this temple has become very popular among the devotees, this temple is a full-fledged Siva temple with "Sanctum Sanctorums" for Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi, Lord Ganesh, in addition to Lord Muruga. Another God who is more popular in this temple is Lord Anjaneya, whose figure is sculpted on a pillar. The entrance to this temple is crowned with a rajagopuram adorned with several stucco images depicting legends from the kanda puranam. In from of the temple is the temple tank. This temple became popular more because of the patronage of the film-industry as most of the activities are concentrated in and around Kodambakkam & Vadapalani. Known as All India Sai Baba Samaj. This temple was built to commomerate the memory of Shirdi Sai Baba. Universal Temple of Sri Rama-Krishna
The Universal Temple of Sri Ramakrishna located within the premises of the Ramakrishna Mutt in Mylapore is a standing monument dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, a symbol of Universal Religion. The temple's architecture blends with the traditional South Indian Temple architecture. At the centre of the shrine is a 7 feet talk statue of Sri Ramakrishna. Carved out of pure marble, it depicts the image of Sri Ramakrishna, seated on a marble lotus. It also houses shrines for Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Anderson Church
John Anderson arrived in Madras as one of the many Scottish missionaries. He started the John Anderson General Assembly School in 1835, which later was christened the Madras Christian College and School and later was shifted to George Town. It is indeed ironical that this zestful educationalist is now remembered not for what if actually stood for; rather his name was given to the church situated in George Town where once the handsome buildings of the Madras Christian College stood. Chinnamalai
Chinnamalai(Little Mount) is another church, where, in a cave hewn out of a small mount, the Apostle St.Thomas lived and preached. It was from here that if leased out through a small opening in order to escape from his assailants. Am imprint found on the boulder on the other side of the cave is page to have been left by him. Christ Church
Christ Church and Christ Church Schools with a long history of about a century and a half. Rev. Henry Taylor, Chapalain in the Service of East India Company, realizing the sad plight of the poor people in and around the Mount Road area, opened a large room for public worship in July 1842, which of course, marked the humble beginning of the Christ Church and the Schools. Arch Deacon Harper established two schools in the chapel compound in 1843 and these schools were then known as the Mount Road Male and Female Schools, which were reorganized and later named Christ Church Schools. Raj Bhavan
In those days there was one 'Guindy Lodge' which was a house belonged to Chinna Venkatathiri a businessman. In and around that house here was a vast area like forest which was very suitable for sports and games. This place was originally purchased from Langhorn, the English Governor. After Langhorn returned to England this house was returned to Goverment. At that time its name was 'Guindy Mote'. The Goverment purchased another Armerian place which was adjoined to this house. All there thing happened during the period me Sir Thomas Mantro. In between 1821 and 1824 all the lands attached to this house was purchased. All these lands and houses were combined together and this campus is now called Raj Bhavan the residence of the Governor me Tamilnadu.
Madras University
Those who have read the Indian history cannot forget the stressed days of the 1857 mutiny,during which the Madras University was established. Started on the model of the London University,146 years ago, the University of Madras still continues to be one of the leading centres of education in India. The University was incorporated by the Act(No.XXVII) of 1857 of the Legislative Council of India with a Senate and Council of India with a Senate and four faculties(Arts,Law,Medicine and Civil Engineering). Valluvar Kottam
Vallur Kottam, yet another architectural marvel was built in memory me poet-saint Thiruvalluvar, who is believed to have lived 2000 year ago. The saint authored a didactic book of ethic proportions called Thirukkural consisting of 1330 couplets under 133 headings. The memorial is shaped like a temple car with an auditorium to accommodate upto 4000 spectators. The temple car structure is carved in granite with intricate details using the Dravidian Architectural style. Location: Valluvar Kottam High Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai-34. Kalakshetra
A renowned training institute for the classical dances & music of India. This "Temple of Arts" was founded by Rukmani Devi Arundale in 1936, to train and encourage young artists and to revive Bharatha natyam, the classical dance form of Tamil Nadu. Freemasons Hall
It is the living example of the cultural and traditional heritage of the people who inabited the ancient city of Madras. The construction of this building who inhabited the ancient city of Madras. Victory War Memorial
The Victory Was Memorial situated on the i Salai Commemorate the victory of the allied armies during World War-I and later became the victory war memorial for the World War-II in memory of those from the then Madras Presidency who lost their lives for the nation. Vivekanandar House
An imposing building on the Marina along the beach road, was constructed in 1842 to store Ice bars imported from the U.S.A by the Tudor Ice Company and the business was on upto 1874, till the ice was produced locally. Later this building was purchased by Bilagiri Iyyengar in 1885, who called this building as 'Castle Kernon'. In 1897 Swami Vivekananda visited this city, after his much acclaimed Chicago speech, on his return journey to Calcutta. The Government took over the building in 1930 and in 1963 it was named after Vivekananda, on the eve of his centenary celebrations. The building was renovated in December 1999 and Swamy Vivekananda's statue was unveiled by the then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu M.Karunanidhi on the 20th December 1999. REGIONAL RAIL MUSEUM:
The Regional Rail Museum at Chennai is located amid picturesque, serene surroundings at ICF Furnishing division. Trucked away among the trees. Built in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style in 1892, this is another land mark of the city. The High court is said to be the second largest judicial complex in the country. NAPPIER BRIDGE:
On the way from Marina Beach to Govt.Secretariat. This bridge was built in 1869 across Coovum river by Governor Napier who held this office from 1866 to 1877. What was iron girders this was broadened and built in concrete and was thrown open for general traffic by Arthur Hope in July 1943. This Bridge bears ample testimony to the Engineering skill of the British.
RIPPON BUILDING:
Another pride of Chennai city, this building was named after Governor Lord Rippon, the father of Self Government in India. The Chennai Corporation and its council are functioning in this building. DOVETON HOUSE:
Doveton House built by the renowned architect, Benjamin Roebeck. The colonial pillars in the front and the half-moon steps at the back of the house resemble another famous building of the same period-the White House. Doveton House served mainly as a residential place for English officers of the East India company. The building took its name from Lt.General John Doveton who acquired it in 1837. He was the soldier in-charge for looking after Tipu Sultan’s sons when Lord Cornwalls held them as hostages in Madras. It houses the Women’s Christian College today.
ELLIOTS BEACH:
A serene beach situated south of Chennai is an ideal picnic spot. The Ashtalakshmi temple constructed on the sands of the beach is another attraction, besides the beach itself. This temples houses the eight faces of Goddess Lakshmi in different shrines group in different tiers of a single tower. COOVUM RIVER:
Famous for its historical background and notorious for its historical background and notorious for its stench. Coovum river was formerly known as Triplicane River. This river runs right across Chennai city and have seven bridges built over it. It’s confluence takes place on the northern side of Marina Beach. 23 kms from Adyar. Windsurfing, Canoe, Kayak, Pedal boat, Row boat etc., are available for the public. It is located at a distance of 80 kms from Kanchipuram. A Good place to get away for a day. Madras Observatory
The Madras Observatory was established in 1792 to spread the knowledge of astronomy,geography and navigation under the Governor of Madras Presedency Sir Charles Oakeley. Michael Tooping Arch, a sailor and an astronomer, was responsible for building it. William Petrie, an English astronomer and member of the Govermenent of Madras,extended support to Sir Oakeley. Petrie had some five years earlier built an observatory at his own expense. This observatory was probably the first modern astronomical observatory in the East. Today all that is left of the Madras Observatory are the five monuments thatcre in a separate enclosure for visitors at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Nungambakkam.
